Member Spotlight: Sarah Sabay
How long have you been a member of Ballard Health Club?
Since 2020. I joined during the pandemic when the big box gyms no longer worked for me.
What motivates you to workout and stay active?
When I was a teenager, I had to undergo spinal fusion surgery for a severe case of scoliosis. I have four metal rods attached to my spine that corrected the curve, but I was told the future would come with a different set of problems. Staying active and always moving has proven to be the best medicine for this.
What does your typical workout look like at the club?
I start with the spin bike using my Peloton app, followed by strength training and core workouts. I like having access to all the medicine balls and kettlebells in one area.
What in the club has worked for you in attaining your fitness goal?
This is a “no attitude” gym. Seeing folks of all ages doing different kinds of workouts is really motivating. I often see someone who might have a few years on me, doing balancing exercises that I can’t even imagine trying, and think “I want to be like that, too!”.
Why do you choose to be a member at BHC, and what keeps you coming back?
I appreciate being in a gym that is so welcoming. It’s great that BHC makes an effort to be part of the community with the free Yoga in the Park and holding events that donate to local charities.
Do you have a favorite piece of equipment, class or exercise at the club?
Coach Bike. It takes me on rides through the jungles of Costa Rica or a coastal beach ride in Italy. The time goes by pretty quickly.
Anything else you'd like to share (advice, wins or feedback?)
Back in the day when I used to train for half-marathons, I would write this quote on my arm “There will come a day when you are no longer able to do this. Today is not that day.”
