Member Spotlight: Mike Madden

How long have you been a member of Ballard Health Club?

I joined in 2010, after I retired.

What motivates you to workout and stay active?

I was never active in sports when I was younger, but a long time ago I started running to stay in reasonable shape. As I got older I decided to do weight training to keep some strength and stay active.  I know that I need to stay strong to enjoy my retirement and to be a part of my kids' and grandkids' lives.

What does your typical workout look like at the club?

I'm fortunate to have a daughter who is a very skilled personal trainer. I follow her prescribed workout plan of warming up and toning up. I've had back problems in the past so there's a focus on glutes and hams, to support the lower back. After the warm-up I go to resistance training. I feel especially good, but tired, after doing deadlifts and leg presses. I finish with fifteen minutes of cardio on the rowing machines. The part of the session I have a love/hate thing with.

What in the club has worked for you in attaining your fitness goal?

When I started, there were staff members who helped me with a basic routine and coached me on form. When I needed specific help, particularly on deadlift form, there was someone available to help me.

Why do you choose to be a member at BHC, and what keeps you coming back?

BHC is a calm, inclusive environment. You'll  find members at all stages of their f fitness journeys here. People are considerate of one-another and focused  on their workouts.  There is plenty of equipment and space to work out. The gym is clean and the facilities are well maintained and continually improving. The cost is reasonable and the gym is in my neighborhood, so it's handy.

Do you have a favorite piece of equipment, class or exercise at the club?

The deadlift. With the new squat racks and deadlift platforms, setting up is easy and efficient. I still find the lifts challenging.

Anything else you'd like to share (advice, wins or feedback?)

I'm happy to feel strong and to be independent. My life is fuller because I get to work out.
