How long have you been a member at Ballard Health Club? 

Since October 2018 

What is your favorite piece of equipment or exercise to do in the gym? 

Deadlifting is the exercise I am the most proud of being able to do. I’ve had lingering lower back issues stemming from an injury, so it was initially very difficult for me to get the proper form down.  With the help and guidance of trainer Hattie, I am now confidently able to do the many variations of a deadlift without worry of re-injury. Also, it’s just fun to lift heavy things. 

Why do you work out? 

Besides preventing future injuries, the main reason why I work out is for my mental health.  As someone who is prone to anxiety, exercising has become my go to way of calming and re-centering my anxious brain. 

What do you do to work out?

I exercise at the gym 5-6 times a week. The majority of those days I am following a work out program that trainer Hattie has created for me. These programs usually include some mix of cardio, strength training, HIIT, and even some yoga! I also try to reserve one session a week for just cardio. 

What in the gym has worked for you in attaining your goals?

I’ve been a member of BHC for several years now but when I wanted to get serious about my physical health, I signed up for weekly personal training sessions with Hattie and this has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. As a trainer, she meets me where I am and has been patient in working through all my injuries. I really value Hattie’s emphasis on form, breathing, and mindfulness. Her background as a yoga instructor has really enhanced our sessions and taught me to listen to my body. And if I’m really lucky, little Aeyla will be there to root for me while I get that last rep in. :) 

Why do you choose to work out at BHC?

I chose BHC because it is a locally-owned, community-focused gym with a great selection of equipment, classes, and amenities at an accessible price point. Both the staff and the members of the gym are all so friendly too. BHC has done a great job of cultivating a positive and supportive environment to work out in!

Anything else you'd like to add?

I sincerely want to thank BHC for all their effort and hard work in creating a safe space to exercise in during the pandemic. They consistently went above and beyond what was required by local guidelines and it’s because of that I’ve always felt safe working out there.
