Staff Spotlight: Carey DeMartini

What is your role at Ballard Health Club and how long have you worked at BHC?

I teach yoga! Ballard Health Club is one of the first places I began teaching yoga almost 26 years ago. I had the pleasure of teaching here for 13 years, took a hiatus and I am so happy to be back again teaching Friday night yoga and Yoga in the Park this summer!

What do you love most about working at BHC?

Hands down, the people.  I have made so many lifelong connections and friends at BHC.

Do you have a favorite success story from working with a member?

I have had the good fortune of having several yoga students practice with me off and on for the past 25 years. I admire the longevity of people's practices and it is an honor to be a part of that.

What’s your favorite part of your job?

I love supporting people in taking care of themselves and it is such a delight to move together with others in community.

What’s one thing most members might not know about your role?

I've been teaching yoga for 26 years and I love it!

Where are you from, originally?

I'm originally a Yooper from the upper peninsula in Michigan.

What’s something fun or surprising about you?

When I'm not teaching yoga, I'm also an Art Therapist.

What’s your favorite way to spend a day off?

Moving my body--walks, hikes--with friends and/or family outside!

Any hobbies outside of the gym?

I've recently discovered that I love watercolor painting!

Favorite workout playlist or hype song?

I go for more of a chillaxing vibe and a long time favorite is Anugama.

Favorite Restaurant in Seattle?

Bongos! Love the fun vibe and their yucca fries are yummy!

Dogs or cats?

I have a cat named Osa and I love dogs, too.
