Member Spotlight: Josh Bonnar
How long have you been a member of Ballard Health Club?
I joined Ballard Health Club in January 2025 when they were having their New Year’s membership deal. I moved up here from California in 2023 and I was just doing workouts at home before signing up at BHC.
What motivates you to workout and stay active?
I’ve always loved the feeling of exercising and I want to stay active for life. I’m very grateful and thankful that I find it harder to take a day off from the gym than to come in. Plus, I was pretty skinny in high school when I first started lifting and I’m sure that still fuels me deep down.
What does your typical workout look like at the club?
I lean more towards bodybuilding/ strength focused resistance training. Nowadays, I tend to do a variation of the push/ pull/ legs split and just repeat that. I’m also trying to make more of an effort to add in core, cardio, and stretching exercises throughout the week.
What in the club has worked for you in attaining your fitness goal?
The variety of equipment and layout of the club really helps. BHC may not be the largest gym around, but it uses every square inch well and you have a lot of options to choose from. Plus, the classes and workshops they offer make it possible to try out new things. I wanted to learn how to use the rowing machine and was able to take the workshop class with Ian to do so.
Why do you choose to be a member at BHC, and what keeps you coming back?
I love the community feeling aspect of BHC. All the staff and members I’ve talked to are super friendly. The gym and equipment is always kept clean and tidy. Also, shout out to my fellow regulars, too. Their consistency and effort keeps me motivated.
Do you have a favorite piece of equipment, class or exercise at the club?
The pull up has to be my favorite exercise right now. I could barely do one when I first joined the club. With the help of the assisted pull up machine, and just consistency, I’m getting into weighted pull ups now and I’m stoked to see where I progress with them in the future. One of my goals this year is to do my first muscle up!
Anything else you’d like to share?
The one muscle I’ve really been trying to work on, and still struggle with, is my social muscle. So, if you see me around, and want to say hi - please do! Trust me, I am not as locked in as I can look. 😁
