How long have you been a member of Ballard Health Club?
Off and on for 10 years, I came back permanently when I heard Kyle got the place.
What motivates you to workout and stay active?
Robust longevity! I was a competitive athlete from age five on; it's in my blood to train. I did go through a patch when I let go of fitness, ate too much Molly Moon's, was overweight and completely deconditioned. It took time and a LOT of effort to recondition, to go from embarrassedly out of breath running one flight of stairs at work to ripping out 100 burpees. There were times I dreaded hitting the treadmill or would just sit there staring at the barely loaded oly bar, angry that I could barely lift what used to be a warm up weight. I'd grumble to myself, 'I have to do this', like a kid who stalls doing homework til 9pm. Then I remembered that God blessed me with health, since then, my motto is an enthusiastic "I GET TO do this!"
What does your typical workout look like at the club?
I focus on strength and conditioning. Warm up on Versaclimber, then HIIT sets, my mainstays are burpees, shouldering the 70# sandball, squats, landmine, jump rope.
What in the club has worked for you in attaining your fitness goal?
There is a huge range of equipment to try out as goals change over time. Seven years back I switched from power lifts (squat, deads, bench) to movement based strength using kettlebells, hex bells, sandballs. Sandballs are awesomely challenging. Super happy there's both standard and neutral grip pull up bars. There's so many toys!
Why do you choose to be a member at BHC, and what keeps you coming back?
It's a great gym, affordable, and I'm delighted to support a friend running a small business in this city. The staff are so friendly. Easy parking. Truly 24/7. Dry sauna!
Do you have a favorite piece of equipment, class or exercise at the club?
The entire X Room & the Random Question dry erase board.
