Personal Training Memberships at BHC

December 2, 2021

Dear Members,

After just celebrating Thanksgiving, I am incredibly thankful to be able to write another letter for our monthly newsletter and to be surrounded by great staff and members every day at the Club! This includes our virtual class instructors, many of whom I have not seen in person for a very long time.

With all the reduction in business caused by COVID over the past 20 months, one area of our business has actually grown during this time, and that area is Personal Training at Ballard Health Club.

Since starting Personal Training at BHC several years ago, we have offered it by selling “6-packs” of sessions for either 25 or 50 minute sessions. Members who purchased one of these packs would use a single session per workout with a trainer until the 6-pack was used up, and then buy another 6-pack to keep going. The personal training 6-packs were priced the same for everyone. We would have some people using personal training 2 or 3 times a week, while others used it as little as once a month. Last summer, we created a “Personal Training membership” as an alternative to the 6-pack. This triggered the start of our growth in our Personal Training offerings. This new packaged monthly membership would reduce the individual cost of the PT sessions based on how often the member used them. The more frequent the sessions, the lower the cost per session. We then optionally bundled in a Club membership, Small Group Training sessions and/or a Nutrition Plan at a discounted price since the member was already paying for personal training. Each Personal Training membership is customized to the needs of the specific client. We now provide everything from 5 days a week at 25 minutes a session, to 1 or 2 times a week at 50 minute sessions and include a Club PLUS membership. We have several “Partner” Personal Training memberships where two people have the same plan and get trained together.

An example to demonstrate how this works is that a single one hour PT session is $80. If someone wants to do a one hour session each week and then supplement their exercise by coming to the Club and working on their own other days of the week, a Personal Training Membership is created with the price per session dropping to $69 a session and if a PLUS club membership is also desired, it is included at the discounted price of $39 (versus $49). In this example, the personal trainer works with the client over more of the challenging workouts in the PT sessions and then assigns the client other workouts to do on their own on other visits to the Club. With this methodology, the client receives high quality training and an overall advanced fitness plan at a lower cost than at other health clubs and/or personal training gyms.

What keeps this all going and continually growing is the fact our Personal Training clients feel they are getting a good value and their experience is improving their life. Credit for this success goes to our fantastic Personal Training staff at BHC.

Something else worth mentioning is that our trainers earn quite a bit more pay when they are doing Personal Training versus working at the front desk. The increased pay allows us to retain quality staff, and helping improve client’s lives provides more job satisfaction to our trainers.

All BHC members can use their included free Fitness Training session for an evaluation of what a Personal Training membership and plan can do for you.

It's hard to believe we have made it to the end of another year, especially in these COVID times, and we continue to resolutely march on, looking forward to a new beginning in 2022.

Thank you again for being members of Ballard Health Club!

Sincerely,

Pat Gilbrough
