Food Bank, Summer Pass and PRIDE

July 5, 2023

Dear Members,

Summer is finally here! Hope your holiday week is going well and you are making the most of the Seattle sunshine!

We are excited about sponsoring a Food Drive with our own Ballard Food Bank this month! New members may have their enrollment fee waived if they bring food for the Food Drive. We have created a webpage with more details about this drive and some very interesting facts about the Ballard Food Bank. Click here to learn more.

We have brought back the “Summer Pass” that we offer to teachers and students over the summer months.  This is a simple, non-recurring 9 or 14 week pass at a reduced price.  Many of our members have used this for their children for their summer break.  Click here to check it out.

As we all know, last month was PRIDE month.  About 10 days ago, I received an email from one of our members asking why we did not do more at BHC to acknowledge this special time and I agreed with this member that we certainly missed the mark on doing just that. We did have some PRIDE themed classes, but we could have done more.

I want to acknowledge that we did not give the amount of attention we could have to show our support for the PRIDE movement during the month of June. With me being in the north end of my 60’s – I was brought up in the 1960’s and 70’s in a very conservative, “religious” environment. I wasn’t knowingly exposed to the LGBTQIA+ community until I started my own business and started hiring people.  I do, however, remember the Stonewall riots in 1969 that started the tradition of PRIDE month

With more life experience under my belt, my feeling toward the LGBTQIA+ community is completely different from the way I was raised. I stand in support of the LGBTQIA+ community and I’m committed to making Ballard Health Club a part of a community that is welcome to all.

Sincerely,

Pat Gilbrough
